Turning scrapped electronics into support for veterans across the South West.
Site launching soon
SW Veterans Project was founded on 1 January 2024 by David Allwright, who served with the Royal Signals from 1973 to 1980. A breakdown while serving in Northern Ireland in late 1979 led to his medical discharge in July 1980 — and more than three decades that followed with little support in place.
That changed in 2016, when a chance conversation with Help for Heroes at a Forces Day event opened the door to help he hadn't known existed. David has spent his working life since helping charities with fundraising — this project is the next chapter, putting that experience directly to work for the veteran community around Plymouth and the South West.
Rather than asking for cash donations alone, SW Veterans Project raises funds by recycling scrapped electrical and electronic equipment — old computers, monitors and other e-waste that would otherwise go to landfill.
It started at home in early 2024, and quickly outgrew the garage after EWR Cornwall Ltd, an e-waste specialist in Torpoint, donated over 2,000 computer monitors in one go — enough that a 40ft shipping container was needed just to store it all.
Funds raised are shared directly with veteran-support organisations working in and around Plymouth and the South West, including Veterans Outdoors. Over £2,000 has already been distributed since the project began.
